Building Economic Sustainability through Tourism Project

Assets and Experiences

Jordan's cultural and natural attractions lie at the core of its tourism appeal, and efforts will be made to develop these precious sites as needed and improve services at the sites and surrounding areas as well as at museums. The tourism product will be diversified as USAID BEST works closely with public and community support to enhance existing tourism products and create new ones, including trails and local activities. Some of the key initiatives under this area of work include:

Distinctive Destinations Program: Implemented by USAID BEST in coordination with MoTA and tourism stakeholders, the program seeks to develop secondary tourism destinations to increase visitation and spending. In 2016 Ajloun, Jerash, Karak, Madaba and Salt were selected, based on specific criteria, to compete for MoTA and USAID BEST support to develop one city as a pilot distinctive destination. In December 2016 Salt was announced as the winner andwork has begun to implement their sustainable tourism plan.

The Jordan Trail: Managed by the Jordan Trail Association (JTA), the trail spans 650 kilometers of beautiful hiking through Jordan’s diverse terrains and landscapes, beginning in Um Qais in the north, passing through 52 villages and ending at the Red Sea in Aqaba. USAID BEST is supporting JTA to ensure its sustainability by developing the trail and a strategy that fosters adventure tourism, and enables service providers to run tours and trips along the trail. USAID BEST and the JTA will create investment opportunities for local communities along theUm Qais to Ajloun and Dana to Petra sections, and USAID will support marketing and promotional activities, build the capacity of JTA staff and train 20 guides.

New JETT routes: USAID BEST is supporting JETT efforts to developten new regular bus excursions from Amman to some of Jordan’s unique destinations. This includes trips to Madaba, Ajloun, Jerash, Ma’in, the Dead Sea and Birgish. JETT will also introduce tourism circuits from the Dead Sea to the Baptism Site, a ‘Golden Triangle’ circuit connecting Aqaba, Wadi Rum and Petra, and city tours in Amman and Madaba. USAID support to JETT will help provide locals and visitors with reliable, affordable and convenient tours to popular destinations around Jordan.

Agritourism in As-Salt: Al Marj for Training and Development is a nonprofit company that seeks to work with local farming communities to develop agritourism in Jordan. USAID BEST is supporting Al Marj develop farm experiences in rural areas of As-Saltwill entail accommodation, food and beverage services, tours and farm experiences. This establishes a new destination for visitors and domestic tourists and creates employment and business opportunities for the communities as it directly engages communities.
