Building Economic Sustainability through Tourism Project

Bringing tourism awareness to As-Salt

10 Jan 2019

As-Salt has gained a lot of attention since it was named Jordan’s first Distinctive Destination in December 2016. Its rich heritage and culture gives As-Salt major tourism potential that many people have yet to fully experience. USAID BEST, in collaboration with the As-Salt Municipality, the Salt Development Corporation (SDC),  the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA), and the Ministry of Environment  (MoE) are implementing a series of events as part of an awareness campaign that will help improve the image of tourism amongst the locals in As-Salt by drawing attention to the cities potential to generate economic opportunities through the tourism sector, encouraging students to pursue tourism and hospitality career paths, and engaging youth and the overall community in protecting the culture, heritage and environment of their city.

By February 2019, high school and university counselors, volunteers and youth center supervisors will begin the train the trainers (ToT) workshops where they will learn tourism-related skills and knowledge to be able to conduct tourism awareness sessions for their students. The workshop will cover an array of material, including the job opportunities in the tourism sector, heritage and culture of As-Salt, visitor-friendly behavior, and the importance of keeping As-Salt neighborhood streets clean. After completing the training workshops, the trainers will each conduct 5 awareness sessions for students within their universities, schools and youth centers.

Other activities will include dialogues with university students on the impact of tourism and the potential to working in the tourism and hospitality sector, a high school painting competition, and events to encourage locals to be environmentally-friendly.

USAID BEST continues to support the community of As-Salt to help foster a sense of pride in their cities’ potential as a tourism destination and encourage the community to seek out opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sector.
