Building Economic Sustainability through Tourism Project

JOHUD International Women's Day Celebration in Aqaba

9 Mar 2019

The Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) and the USAID Building Economic Sustainability through Tourism project (BEST) celebrated International Women's Day on March 9th, 2019 in Aqaba under the theme “Balance for Better”.

The event was held at the Princess Basma for Development Center in Aqaba, with a series of activities held to mark the achievements of women in tourism and hospitality and a call to action for accelerating gender parity in these sectors in Jordan. The center adopted tourism as a new theme and to raise awareness on the importance of the sector, 61 artists took part in painting murals and small paintings at the center.

Ruba Salim Quossous, who is a manager of the Aqaba Tourism Directorate, featured in a video at the event, noting the progress made in female representation in the sector.

“I still face some difficulties from some people who do not accept advice or direction from women, but the tourism industry has opened opportunities for women. Women are now being productive within their communities, and nowadays it is culturally acceptable that women work in the hotel or tourism industries. Thankfully, that has changed for women.”

More than 1,000 people from the local community attended the event, partaking in the handicrafts, food products and live cooking and baking of 91 women vendors from Ma’an and Aqaba. Women artisans from Ma’an were also present, offering voluntary classes on wood stitching to interested women committees in Aqaba and Ma’an.

With the ongoing support of USAID BEST for gender equality and female empowerment in the tourism and hospitality sectors, JOHUD pushes further to implement strategic plans to increase the capability of women and girls and promote gender equality and female empowerment within their societies.
