11 Mar 2019

The Petra Archeological Park (PAP) has been designated by the Green Destinations Foundation as one of 2019’s Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations, recognizing both Petra and its managing body for the effective measures put in place to prevent negative tourism impacts on nature and landscape, culture and tradition, environment and climate and on host communities.

“It is always great to showcase Petra at international events and receiving such an important award is motivation to strive for more achievements,” said Suleiman Farajat, Chief Commissioner for the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority. He added, “It is important that going forward we highlight Petra’s position as a World Heritage site and the major tourism destination in Jordan, while making sure that local communities benefit as a result.”

The Green Destinations Foundation also shortlisted the Petra Archeological Park as a finalist in the Best of Culture and Communities category, which singles out the top three destinations for this category out of the winning 100. PAP was selected alongside Gozo in Malta and Berguedà, Catalunya in Spain. PAP ranked, second place in the category in recognition of its leadership in protecting culture and tradition while involving local communities.

The award ceremony took place at the ITB Berlin event  in March 2019, the world's leading travel trade show. Following the official announcement of the Top 100 winners, PAP now has the right to use the Top 100 logo in their marketing activities and material.

USAID BEST supported Petra Archeological Park’s participation in the competition, collaborating with the Petra Development Tourism Region Authority on the submission of their nomination file in December 2018.
