Yarmouk University’s tourism management program meets international excellence standards

18 Nov 2018

Yarmouk University on November 18 officially received UNWTO TedQual Certification for its Bachelor program in tourism management. A ceremony was held at the university in Irbid to celebrate this achievement, which signifies the quality and excellence of the program on an international scale.

The certification is awarded by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) following a series of internal and external evaluations which determine a program’s quality. It is the only international certification offered for higher tourism education programs.

“Our students will now compete on a local, regional and international level,” said Muhammed Shunnaq, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management. He added, “They will also have opportunities equal to those provided by higher education degrees from distinguished universities that have also acquired this certification from UNWTO.”

H.E. Issa Gammoh, Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, also attended the event. He said, “This certification is very important because it’s the first of its kind to be obtained in the whole area by Yarmouk University. And in truth, this calls for pride, that this important educational and scientific institution has risen up and lives up to a degree whereby it receives a certification of quality in tourism from the United Nations World Tourism Organization.”

USAID BEST helped Yarmouk University develop its curricula and build the capacity of faculty members to meet the international standards required by UNWTO. This support comes as part of larger efforts to improve education and develop the workforce within Jordan's tourism and hospitality sector.
