'Old to New': A walk to celebrate World Tourism Day

13 Oct 2018

In celebration of World Tourism Day, the Jordan Inbound Tour Operators Association (JITOA), with USAID BEST support, is organizing a walk in Amman under the theme ‘A Walk through Time’ on Saturday October 13, 2018. The walk seeks to raise awareness regarding the importance of the tourism sector to Jordan. It will be held under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Lina Annab and in cooperation with the Jordan Tourism Board, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Greater Amman Municipality.

The event will bring together industry partners, residents and tourists on a cultural walk through time from Al Weibdeh, which represents the old parts of Amman, to the Boulevard in Abdali, the new. The walk will be guided and will include stops at touristic destinations and historic landmarks that deserve more exposure, such as heritage houses, schools, churches and mosques. The idea is to highlight these spots while underscoring the impact tourism has on Jordan and its importance to local communities.

Since the theme for this year’s World Tourism Day, chosen by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, is Tourism and Digital Transformation, this new walking tour will also boost digital exposure of the area for potential international travelers.

“Al Weibdeh represents a mosaic of the diverse Jordanian society,” said H.E. Akel Biltaji, former mayor of Amman, at a press conference to announce the event.  He explained, “Digital transformation is what will allow people to reach these types of landmarks.”

The walk will conclude at the Boulevard with the opening of the Tourism Experiences Marketplace, which will feature new tourism products and digital platforms that can be used to both promote and discover emerging tourism experiences. There will be food stalls, games for children, community crafts and more activities.
